Description
English Yew are native to the UK and are extremely long lived. English Yew is an old classic commonly seen in churchyards, as a large imposing tree or a classical informal hedge. They have been used to outline mazes and topiary pieces of plant art. When grown as a hedge screening they should be kept at about 3m or as a tree specimen it can reach heights of about 15m.
Female Yew Trees produce the small red berry type fruits that are attractive to birds and are best visible during the winter months. Yew trees are one of the most magnificent specimens with its dark green foliage, aromatic when crushed, in any garden or location.
Yew will grow in most soils and locations, and can be drought tolerant. Chalk, light sandy and limestone soils will not bother the Yew nor slow its growth down. Plant in sunny positon for best growth, but never in waterlogged ground.
Where to Plant
Plant 3-5 per metre for hedge schemes, single row, or 5-7 double staggered row for a denser hedge.
**Scot Plants Direct can only supply bareroot plants when they are dormant during the winter months from November to April annually.
