Blackthorn is another hedging plant tolerant of coastal or seaside situations and a native to the UK. Blackthorn is fast growing making it a good boundary natural hedging protection and with its thorns, will be a good security barrier. Sloe berries are the fruit from the blackthorn bush and can be used for sloe gin Sloe bush is fully hardy and tough, and tolerates most soil types.
Where to Plant
Plant full sun to dapple shade, in most soil types, well draining and water well during dry spells. Plant 3 per metre for single row hedge, or 5-7 per metre for double staggered row, more dense hedge. Ultimate height 3-4m x 3-4m in 20 years.
