Green Berberis is a deciduous, compact variety with green coloured leaves, orange flowers in spring and red fruits in autumn. Berberis is perfect for bringing in that spring colour to the gardens. It is a good choice for coastal areas as it tolerates the salt, windy conditions. Quick growing and easy to maintain. Berberis is useful for informal hedging and and to help secure boundaries thanks to its sharp spikes Great for wildlife as its spikes will protect nesting birds and red autumn fruits make the berberis hedging plants attractive to wildlife in the autumn.
Where to Plant
Berberis can be planted in most soil types, rull sun to dappled shade, well draining. Plant 3-4 per metre for maximum density hedge in a single row or 5 per metre double staggered row for denser hedge. If berberis becomes a bit woody and tall, prune back hard in late winter. Stems can be cut back about 30cm at this time.
**Scot Plants Direct can only supply bareroot plants when they are dormant during the winter months from November to April annually.
