Pruple leaf Berberis is compact, dense, prickly variety and great security defense. Purple berberis has reddish - purple deciduous leaves turning bright red in autumn. The Berberis stems bear sharp spines and the wood inside the stem is yellow in colour. Flowers are pale yellow, flushed red in spring with vivid red berries in autumn. This purple Berberis is ideal for ushering in colour for the spring to informal borders. Where to Plant
Plant full sun to dappled shade, well-draining soil. Water well for the first year to establish the plants. Plant 3-4 per metre for single row hedge, or 5-7 for double staggered row denser hedge.
