The purplish / black, sweet, juicy fruits appear mid-summer should be picked and eaten soon after. Be careful as the ripe fruit is delicate and may crumble in your hand. Mulberries blend well with other fruits, especially pears and apples. Just loads of nutrition in one little berry. They can also be made into wine and make an excellent dried fruit, especially the black varieties. Perfect for pies, tarts, puddings and wine! Better yet try them ripe and straight off the tree.
Where to Plant
Plant full sun for best fruiting, south facing, well-draining soil. Although slightly drought-resistant, mulberries need to be watered in the summer. If the roots become too dry during summer, the fruit is likely to drop before it has fully ripened and the tree will not grow. This is essential when planting young trees.
