Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica) 40-60cm bare root hedging plants are ideal for establishing dense, fast-growing privacy hedges in UK gardens. Green beech tolerates most soils and growing conditions, thriving in full sun or partial shade.

Key Features

  • Height supplied: 40-60cm bare root
  • Growth rate: 40-60cm per year
  • Leaf cover: Dense, retains coppery leaves through winter for year-round privacy
  • Best planting: November to March (dormant season)
  • Soil suitability: Adapts to clay, loam or sandy soils; avoid wet ground

Use Case

Green beech hedges are popular for privacy screens, windbreaks, and boundary planting. Compared to hornbeam, beech prefers well-drained soils and rewards with lush foliage from spring to autumn. In most UK locations except exposed windy sites, it establishes quickly and requires routine trimming for shape.

FAQs

  • Is green beech suitable for privacy hedging?
Yes, its dense leaf canopy and winter leaf retention make it excellent for screening.
  • How does beech compare to hornbeam for shady or wet sites?
Bare root beech prefers well-drained soils; hornbeam tolerates wetter/shadier sites better.
  • Are bare root beech easy to establish?
Yes, if planted in the dormant season (Nov–Mar) with regular watering during establishment.
  • Do beech hedges keep leaves over winter?
Yes, mature beech hedges retain brown leaves through winter, providing cover.

Planting and care

This is a bare-root plant, supplied dormant between November and March. Plant within a few days of arrival for best results, keeping the roots moist and out of direct sun until they go in the ground. Standard spacing is 3 plants per metre, or 5 per metre for a denser, faster screen.
