Beech (Fagus sylvatica) Hedging - Bare Root

Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is one of the most visually rewarding hedges you can plant in the UK. Native deciduous shrub-tree with bright green spring foliage, deeper green summer leaves, and a striking copper-russet winter colour — beech holds its dead leaves all winter, dropping them only when new spring growth pushes through in April. Fast-growing (30-60cm/year), tolerates hard pruning, and excellent as a windbreak.

Bare-root Beech hedging — Green, Copper and Purple varieties

Bare-root beech is the most economical way to plant a long run, despatched November to April while plants are dormant. We stock:

  • Bare-root Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica) in heights from 40-60cm to 150-175cm — the classic species
  • Bare-root Copper/Purple Beech (Fagus sylvatica Atropurpurea/Purpurea) for the darker burgundy summer foliage
  • Mixed Green and Copper Beech for the traditional country-house striped hedge effect

Standard spacing is 3 plants per metre for a dense single-row hedge, or 4-5 plants per metre staggered for tall wind-break screens.

New to beech? Read the guide first

Beech has one major quirk: it hates waterlogged soil. Our complete UK buyer's guide to beech hedging covers green vs copper, why beech holds winter leaves (marcescence), planting season, spacing, care, and when to choose hornbeam instead.
