Sea Buckthorn Bare Root 40-60cm for Hedging (Hippophae rhamnoides)

Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a resilient, native hedging plant suited for coastal gardens and exposed, windy locations. Thriving in wet, poor, or saline soils, this bareroot shrub acts as a nitrogen fixer, improving local soil conditions.

Key Features

  • Wind and Salt Tolerance: Ideal for coastal gardens and shelterbelts.
  • Edible Berries: Orange berries rich in vitamin C and antioxidants—suitable for juice, sauces, and preserves.
  • Size: Supplied bareroot at 40-60cm height for fast hedging establishment.
  • Flowering and Fruit: Tiny yellow flowers in April; berries last into winter, supporting wildlife.
  • Security Hedging: Spiny stems form a natural barrier. Thorns are sharp—caution for children and pets advised.
  • Soil Improvement: Nitrogen-fixing roots benefit neighbouring plants.
  • Hardiness: Survives coastal gales and wet winters; dislikes prolonged dry soil.

  • What are the soil requirements? Performs best in wet or poor soils—do not plant in very dry sites.
  • Is it safe for children or pets? Stems have thorns; consider planting away from play areas.

Origin: UK grown, supplied bareroot for winter/spring planting season.

Planting and care

This is a bare-root plant, supplied dormant between November and March. Plant within a few days of arrival for best results, keeping the roots moist and out of direct sun until they go in the ground. Standard spacing is 3 plants per metre, or 5 per metre for a denser, faster screen.

Read our complete bare-root hedging buyer's guide for full instructions on when to plant, how to handle the plants on arrival, planting depth, spacing for different uses, and what to expect in the first season.
