Natural Bamboo Canes or Poles for Gardens
Natural bamboo canes for British gardens
Strong, long-lasting and naturally weather-resistant, our Tonkin bamboo canes are the gardener's go-to solution for plant supports, climbing frames, netting structures, fencing, and dozens of jobs in between. We stock sizes from 3ft to 6ft in both standard and extra-thick grades, with bulk packs available for larger projects. All prices include VAT.
Choosing the right cane size
- 3ft canes (90cm) — perfect for young pea and bean plants, dahlias, and herbaceous perennials. The right size for tying in early-season growth before plants reach their full height.
- 4ft canes (120cm) — for tomatoes, peppers, sweet peas, and most container-grown vegetables. Tall enough for a season's growth, short enough to be unobtrusive in a small garden.
- 5ft canes (150cm) — for runner beans, climbing French beans, cucumbers, and tall dahlias. The standard "wigwam" size for vegetable plot supports.
- 6ft canes (180cm) — for full-height runner bean rows, cordon trained tomatoes, and structural frames for bird netting, fruit cages, or row covers.
Standard or extra-thick — which do you need?
Our standard canes (8–14mm diameter depending on length) are ideal for most light support work — staking individual plants, building wigwams, holding up netting. Extra-thick canes (14–18mm) are heavier and significantly stronger, suited to anything that needs to take a load: full-height bean structures, fruit cages, espalier frames, or any cane being driven into firm or stony ground. If you've ever had a standard cane snap halfway through a windy summer, an extra-thick one is what you wanted.
How long do bamboo canes last?
With reasonable care, a Tonkin bamboo cane will give you three to five seasons of outdoor use. The main causes of premature failure are: leaving the bottom inch sitting in waterlogged soil over winter (rots from the base), storing wet rather than dry between seasons (mould inside the hollow), and leaving them out in full UV through a summer of disuse (UV makes the fibres brittle). Pull canes up at the end of the season, hose off any soil, and store in a dry shed or garage and you'll comfortably double their useful life.
