Wild Privet (Ligustrum vulgare) is the UK native privet: semi-evergreen, fast growing and superb for wildlife, with white summer flowers for bees and black berries for birds. Supplied 150-175cm tall as a root ball for an instant screen; plant 2 per metre. Tolerates shade, chalk and coastal exposure.

Planting

Plant as soon as possible after delivery in a trench with the top of the root ball level with the soil, firm in well, water thoroughly and keep watered through the first spring and summer. Leave the hessian on; it rots away.

Bare root plants are field-grown and lifted dormant — the cheapest way to plant a hedge. Pot grown plants have an established root system and can be planted year-round. Root ball plants are mature field-grown plants lifted with a soil ball for instant height.
