Bird Cherry - Prunus padus

Bird Cherry is used widely as part of mixed native hedges, with lovely delicate, white, star-shaped flowers that are sweetly scented and follow with small, bitter fruits. Prunus padus has a growth rate of 20-40cm per year and can reach a height of 4m tall. We recommend planting in a sheltered/inland position, with either a full sun/partially shaded aspect. As it is often used for wildlife, Bird Cherry doesn't require much maintenance and can pretty much be left to grow on its own accord. If a bit of neatening up is required, however, we do recommend a light prune in Summer, once it has finished flowering and fruiting (but only to remove dead/diseased/crossing branches).
