FAQs

  • Q: Is hornbeam suitable for boggy ground?
A: Yes, hornbeam thrives where few other hedges survive, tolerating periodic waterlogging.
  • Q: How does hornbeam compare to beech for privacy?
A: Hornbeam holds brown leaves in winter for screening and is more tolerant of wet sites than beech.
  • Q: Will it cope with coastal winds?
A: Excellent wind resistance, ideal for exposed areas.
  • Q: Best pruning method for dense hedges?
A: Cut back hard in late winter or early spring to promote bushiness.
  • Q: Are bare root hornbeam easy to establish?
A: Yes, when planted while dormant and watered well in the first season.

Planting and care

This is a bare-root plant, supplied dormant between November and March. Plant within a few days of arrival for best results, keeping the roots moist and out of direct sun until they go in the ground. Standard spacing is 3 plants per metre, or 5 per metre for a denser, faster screen.

Common questions

Bare root plants are field-grown and lifted dormant — the cheapest way to plant a hedge. Pot grown plants have an established root system and can be planted year-round. Root ball plants are mature field-grown plants lifted with a soil ball for instant height.
Pot grown plants can go in the ground at any time of year. Bare root is supplied dormant from November to March, and root ball plants are lifted in that same window.
3 plants per metre for a standard single-row hedge, or 5 per metre (staggered double row) for a dense screen.
