Holly is an excellent choice for severe climates, like those in Scotland. Common Holly is native to the UK and one of the toughest evergreens used for hedging and for providing shelter from strong winds. Their spiny leaves and dense growth are great anti-burglar barrier, sound proof hedge, garden tree, etc. Holly is excellent for woodland gardens as they provide shelter and food for wildlife. They have spiny leaves, are evergreen, tough and hardy - ideal for a natural security hedging. Small white flowers in spring followed by bright red or orange berries on pollinated female plants.
Where to Plant:
Plant full sun to dappled shade, well draining, moist soil. well-drained, moderately fertile. Holly is also tolerant of dry shade once established. Ultimate height and spread - 10-20m x 6m. Plant 50cm to 1m apart (about 3-5 per metre) for best hedge growing hedge.
