Schisandra chinensis is a deciduous climber commonly referred to as the 'five flavoured berry'. It can be sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent. Schisandra berries are made into various medicinal preparations for longevity and overall vitality. It is native to northeast China and parts of Russia, cultivated in long rows and harvest is end of July and beginning of August. Schisandra is a potent general tonic, and it is claimed it can aid in decreasing fatigue, stress and other broad health uses. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2000 years.
