Rhubarb Victoria is one of the all-time greats when it comes to rhubarb. It is a very popular and highly sought-after vegetable that is prized by gardeners and has established the ‘gold’ standard by which to judge rhubarb. Victoria has large, fat stems, bright red skin, lack of stringiness and a tart, apple-gooseberry flavour with a hint of lemon or grapefruit (depending on your soil).
Victoria is an extremely versatile rhubarb variety used in everything from jams and fruit tarts to soups and sauces. It is possibly one of the most adaptable garden crops you can grow. Victoria is considered a perennial, and it will yield years of bountiful harvests with little trouble and pests.
Victoria was created by Joseph Myatt of Manor Farm in Deptford, England about 175 years ago which is a testament to its superiority. It was introduced in 1837 in honour of Queen Victoria and some think has been the root of symbolism the dessert cookery of her reign.
There are two physical characteristics of Victoria rhubarb that make it stand out from other varieties: its bright red colour and large stems.
Where to Plant
Rhubarb grows in well-draining soil and not waterlogged. Best planted about November / December, but planting can continue up to the beginning of March. Plant crown with growing point at or just below the soil surface. Planting areas that do not drain well will rot the crown. Space crowns about 1m apart with 1-2m between rows. Rhubarb requires seven to nine weeks of cold weather below 3 degrees C depending on cultivar.
