Horneam (Carpinus betulus) makes a good native hedge and will tolerate wet soil, dense shade and exposed, windy sites. It also likes chalky and clay soils. Birds like the fruits. Hornbeam flowers in the form of catkins which remain on the tree until October and during the winter the leaves remain on until spring
