Berberis thunbergii (Japanese barberry) is native to Japan and eastern Asia. It is a dense deciduous, spiny shrub with deeply grooved, brown, spiny branches with a single spine. The leaves are green to blue green, very small and oval shaped. Flowers are pale yellow in long umbrella shaped clusters. The edible fruit is a glossy bright red to orange berry.
